Freda Opolka


Freda Opolka Freda Opolka Freda Pearl Opolka, 88, of Goetzville, was employed as a township clerk for 32 years and served as the organist at St. Stanislaus Kostka Catholic Church for 40 years. Mrs. Opolka passed away Sunday, January 15, 2017, in Sault Ste. Marie.

She was born January 30, 1928, to Frederick and Pearl (nee McLeod) Stevenson in DeTour Village.

Mrs. Opolka grew up in DeTour. She attended DeTour Schools, where she was graduated with perfect attendance and also was valedictorian of her class.

She met John Opolka at bingo, and they were married April 24, 1947, in Goetzville. They started their family after moving to Goetzville, where their three children grew up.

She was a member of St. Stanislaus Kostka Catholic Church and Raber Amvets Auxiliary. She was a lifetime member of the St. Stanislaus Kostka Altar Society.

Mrs. Opolka enjoyed playing bingo, visiting casinos, and watching Detroit Tigers baseball. As a young woman, she liked ice fishing with her friends. She loved quilting, and she left several quilts for her family to finish.

She is survived by two daughters and their families, Marilynn Opolka of Goetzville and Glenda Opolka and Jay Fehner of Raber; one son and his family, Jack and Nancy Opolka of Goetzville; grandchildren, David and Leslie Opolka, Jonathon and Sheila Crawford, and Michael and Ludi Crawford, and great-grandchildren, Kaalin and Lucas Crawford and Taylor and Joseph Opolka. She is also survived by a sister and her family, Martha King of DeTour; three sisters-in-law, Coleen Stevenson and Theadorsa Opolka, both of Sault Ste. Marie, and Rosemary Opalka of Goetzville; a brother-in-law, Jim LaLonde of Oregon, and many nieces and nephews.

In addition to her parents, Mrs. Opolka was preceded in death by her husband, John Opolka; a granddaughter, Leslie Opolka; three sisters, Mary Plont, Irene LaLonde, and Catherine Stevenson; a brother, William “Billy Jack” Stevenson; a brother-in-law, Lou King, and a niece, Penni Dumback.

Visitation will be Thursday, January 19, from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m. at R. Galer Funeral Home in Pickford.

Mass of Christian Burial will be Friday, January 20, at noon at St. Stanislaus Kostka Catholic Church in Goetzville.

Interment will be at St. Stanislaus Cemetery in the spring.
