All About The Town

By Betty Browning

Many people in this country make New Year’s resolutions: I want a better job; I am going to quit smoking; I am going to lose weight!

Programs to help with fitness and weight loss goals are available in the St. Ignace area. At Little Bear East Arena here in St. Ignace, at 275 Marquette Street, I met with Derek Rountree, the facility maintenance director. From Monday to Saturday, the arena offers a free walking program. People can come in anytime from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. and walk for free around the perimeter of the hockey rink.

There were six to eight people walking when we entered, all different ages, men and women alike. Janie Chambers stopped to talk with me.

“How long have you been coming here to walk?” I asked her.

“This is only my first day back,” she said. “I had three heart surgeries, and I am finally able to start walking again.”

She also told me that her doctors told her it would be very good for her to walk, to help her circulatory system and her heart.

She said that before her heart issues, she used to walk eight miles every day.

She seemed very happy to be back here, even though she knew she would now have to start over and only walk short distances until her body could become accustomed to longer walks.

Jerry and Sue Fenlon said they are taking part now because of the program that the Moran Township had created for its citizens, paying fees so all of the people of Moran Township could use the Little Bear free for one year. What a great way to help people, especially those who cannot afford it, to be able to exercise, work out, and get fit.

Jerry also said he hoped all of the people of Moran Township would take advantage of this generous gift.

This may be something other townships could do in the future for their citizens.

Derek said that the township residents have access to everything the facility offers.

In the weight room were people working out with the equipment and Derek said that they also have an aerobics group that meets here every Monday, Wednesday, and Thursday, from 5:20 p.m. to 6:30 p.m.

In an upcoming issue of The St. Ignace News I will outline more local fitness options.

Anyone who is thinking of starting a weight loss program or a weight training program is advised to check with your doctor if you have any health issues before starting any kind of program. Your doctor can give you the best advice as to what program will be best for your age and your weight.
