Mary Lou Laverty


Mary Lou Laverty Mary Lou Laverty Mary Lou Laverty, 87, of Curtis, passed away Thursday morning, January 19, 2017, at Tendercare Nursing Home in Munising.

She was born August 10, 1929, to Carrol and Lena (nee Feister) Wolfe in Angola, Indiana.

As a teenager, Mrs. Laverty worked at her parents’ truck stop, Hoosier Hills. In January 1945, she moved with her family to Curtis. She was graduated from Newberry High School.

She married Everett Laverty November 30, 1950, and together they owned and operated L&W Service in Curtis for several years. Mrs. Laverty was also employed as a bus driver for Tahquamenon Area Schools.

She was a member of Curtis Baptist Church. She served as a volunteer with the Portage Township Ambulance Corps.

In her younger days, Mrs. Laverty enjoyed snowmobiling, and later berry picking with her husband and baking pies. She also knitted hats for the newborn babies at Marquette General Hospital.

She is survived by a son, Donald Laverty of Curtis; a brother and his family, David and Barbara Wolfe of Florida, and several grandchildren, nieces, and nephews.

In addition to her parents, Mrs. Laverty was preceded in death by her husband, Everett, who died June 20, 2004, and two siblings, Yavonne Ritter and Margaret Jean Spaman.

Services will be Saturday, January 28, at noon at Curtis Baptist Church with Pastor Greg Carlson officiating. Visitation will be from 11 a.m. to time of the service at the church.

Interment will take place in the spring at Woodlawn Cemetery in Curtis.
