Engadine Consolidated Schools

As a school leader, I believe it is important for teachers and administrators to continue to learn. I recently attended a conference of the Michigan Association of School Administrators (MASA). The keynote speaker was Dr. Thomas Tucker, the superintendent of Princeton City Schools in Cincinnati, Ohio. He was selected as the MASA National Superintendent of 2016. Dr. Tucker shared his story with the attendees of the conference. His message was to “pay it forward” and he addressed the need to resolve issues of poverty. By resolving these “opportunity gaps,” we will be able to impact the achievement gaps more readily.

Our first semester recently ended, with 74% of our students in kindergarten through fifth grade showing positive behavior and not receiving an office referral, and 53% of our students in grades six through 12 making it through the first semester without receiving an office referral. We appreciate those students who continuously contribute to a positive learning environment. We’re exploring ways to reward students for their positive behavior more frequently than by semester.

Congratulations to our local spelling bee winners: 5th Grade: Trisha Dukes, first place; Lilia Bigelow, second place; 6th Grade: Trevin Master, first place; Leah French, second place; 7th Grade: Dillon Schaap, first place; Asher Nelson, second place, and 8th Grade: Jacob Schubert, first place; Camille Crandall, second place. These students will compete in the district spelling bee Wednesday, February 1, in St. Ignace. Go Eagles!

Don’t forget to mark your calendars for the Winter Carnival and Polar Eagle Plunge Saturday, February 25. There are lots of fun activities for all ages. The day ends with a free community dinner sponsored by Graymont Rexton Project at the Garfield Township Hall. Hope to see you.
