Vernon ‘PaPa’ Kuczenski

Vernon Kuczenski Vernon Kuczenski Vernon Ralph “PaPa” Kuczenski, 77, of Pickford, died Tuesday, January 31, 2017, in Sault Ste. Marie.

He was born September 21, 1939, to William and Nora (nee Polman) Kuczenski in Park Falls, Wisconsin.

Mr. Kuczenski grew up in Park Falls, until the family moved to Canada in 1951, where he attended Greenwood Elementary and Lakley Tech schools.

As a teenager, he began working at Art’s Meat Market in Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario.

He married Brenda Carle February 27, 1960, in Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario.

In 1962, he started working for Algoma Steel, where he worked for more than 31 years. After he retired in October 1993, Mr. Kuczenski moved to Pickford in 1995 to his son and daughter-in-law’s farm and began raising emus, horses, beef cattle, and pigs. In 1997 he and his son refurbished the barn and added meat processors to begin butchering. They’ve cut, wrapped, and smoked meat since then.

He was a member of Steelworkers of America 2251. He was a “do it yourselfer,” building several homes and painting cars. He was a focused, hardworking man who loved spending time with the animals, especially emus, family members said.

He is survived by a son and his family, Norman and Jodi Kuczenski of Pickford; a daughter-in-law and her family, Christine and Brian Irving of Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario; grandchildren, Trisha McCullan, Brandy and Mark Piwowarczyk, and Curtis Erb, and great-grandchildren, Hunter Kuczenski, Grace McCullan, Kamden Kuczenski, Wyatt Erb, Colt Erb, Allison Jane Piwowarczyk, and Jackson Piwowarz.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Brenda; a son, Steven Kuczenski; a grandson, Bryan Kuczenski; five brothers, Lloyd, Ralph, Norman, Donald, and Arnold Kuczenski, and a sister, Elizabeth “Betty” Kuczenski.

A memorial service for Mr. Kuczenski and his wife will be held this summer.

Interment will be at Donaldson Cemetery.

R. Galer Funeral Home in Pickford assisted the family with arrangements.
