Memories Become Part of the Present With Looking Back

LETTER TO THE EDITOR

To the Editor:

I think that the following words about the “Looking Back 50 Years Ago” column published in the January 26 issue of The St. Ignace News will reward you for the time and effort it takes to find the information for the “Looking Back” column.

I was sharing the “Looking Back” section of that issue of the newspaper Friday night, January 27, with the residents at Evergreen Living Center in St. Ignace. I related to the group that the “50 Years Ago” section stated that three communities in Mackinac County received statewide recognition for demonstrating all-out Michigan hospitality when hundreds of motorists were stranded for up to two days in a big post-Thanksgiving snowstorm.

Here is the good part: One of the residents spoke up and said, “I was one of those people who brought people into my home during that storm.” I said, “What? Tell us about it.”

She said that it was the worst snowstorm in years, and those traveling on west US-2 were stopped. She said many of the travelers were college students from Northern Michigan University and Michigan Technological University, trying to get back to classes after spending Thanksgiving with their families.

She enjoyed recalling that newsworthy event that happened in January 1967, and the rest of us enjoyed hearing about her personal involvement in the event.

And the Yooper hospitality goes on.

I appreciate The St. Ignace News for “digging up” news from the past that brings back memories to our senior citizens, making them feel part of the present.
