The winter months are going by quickly, with just enough snow for winter activities. Snow fell heavily Sunday, February 12. Snowmobilers are making good use of the wellgroomed trails. We appreciate the volunteers of the Straits Area Snowmobile Club who take care of grooming the snowmobile trails. A new volunteer this year is Tucker Thomas.

The 2017 Labatt Blue U.P. Pond Hockey Championship will take place on Chain Lake Thursday, February 16, through Sunday, February 19. The weather has not been cold enough for long enough to form solid ice to hold the event on its usual location on Moran Bay, so it will return to Chain Lake, where it was also held in 2012. Almost 200 hockey teams will compete, and admission is free for spectators. The Detroit Red Wings alumni exhibition game at Little Bear East Arena Friday at 7 p.m. will be offered free of charge for spectators this year.

The Mackinac Animal Aid Association will sponsor a Valentine’s Day bake sale Saturday, February 18, starting at 9:30 a.m,. at the Family Fare grocery store in St. Ignace. Donated baked goods are appreciated and may be dropped off the morning of the sale between 9 a.m. and 9:30 a.m. All proceeds will benefit homeless pets in Mackinac County.
