Helen Simmons

Helen Simmons Helen Simmons Helen Josephine Simmons, 94, of Hessel, passed away Tuesday, February 7, 2017, in St. Ignace.

She was born August 6, 1922, to Eric and Svea (nee Rosengreen) Eckberg in Flint.

Mrs. Simmons grew up in Flint, and then on a farm in Grand Blanc.

She married John Harvey Simmons in 1945. They made their home in Simmons Settlement near Hessel with Mr. Simmons’ family.

Mrs. Simmons was active in the Hessel Baptist Church, where she taught Sunday school.

She enjoyed making rugs, quilting, crocheting, knitting, and riding snowmobiles with friends. Mrs. Simmons especially enjoyed dancing, and she often participated in dancing fundraisers for St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital.

She is survived by one son, Clifford Simmons of Hessel.

In addition to her parents, Mrs. Simmons was preceded in death by her husband, who died in 2001; a son, Patrick, who died at the age of 12, and one brother, Clarence Eckberg.

Services were Monday, February 13, at 11:30 a.m. at Lighthouse Baptist Church in Hessel. Visitation was from 10:30 a.m. to time of the service at the church.

Burial will be in Rockview Cemetery in Marquette Township in the spring.

R. Galer Funeral Home in Pickford assisted the family with arrangements.
