Saints Hockey Prepares To Host State Tournament

By John Raffel

The St. Ignace First National Bank/Mackinac Grille midget BB hockey team is getting ready to compete in the state finals Friday, March 10, through Sunday, March 12, to be hosted at home.

This week, the team is coming off a successful weekend after having finished runner-up in the home Bridge Brawl Tournament Saturday, February 25, and Sunday, February 26. Coach Jim Zdebski’s team faced Menominee-Marinette, Gladwin, Manistique, and Cheboygan.

Carter Tallaire leads the team in scoring with 29 goals and 29 assists, followed by Kody Rickley with 27 goals and 27 assists. Hunter Frazier and Hunter DeKeyser both have 19 goals and 14 assists.

St. Ignace skated to a 5-5 tie with Menominee-Marinette in the finals Sunday. Menominee-Marinette scored in the shootout to win.

“Hunter Frazier had a great weekend and had a couple of goals (Sunday),” Zdebski said.

“Rickley had a good game on offense. Tallaire had a goal or two and Carter played a lot of defense this weekend.”

St. Ignace also beat Cheboygan 5-0, Manistique 5-0, and Gladwin 9-3. The midgets tied Menominee- Marinette the first time they played them, 3-3.

“We had really good offense and good defense for most of the weekend,” Zdebski said. “(Sunday), we gave up some goals we don’t like to. Defense played well throughout the weekend.”

This coming weekend is an off one for the midgets, followed by the state tourney at home.

The tourney will feature St. Ignace, Tawas, Calumet, Iron River, Frasier, Livonia, Port Huron, and Southfield for an eight-team field.

“It should be a great weekend,” Coach Zdebski said.
