Proud of Our Saints Boys Team

To the Editor:

Years down the road, looking back at LaSalle High School basketball records, a reader will see the 2016/17 varsity boys team with one win and 19 losses in the regular season.

The numbers will stand out, especially in light of more favorable results years prior. But in looking at when the one win occurred, a hidden and more important reason for the 2016/17 season to stand out emerges. For the win did not come early in the season, it did not come midseason, it came in the last game of the season. It came when, after 19 straight losses, players of lesser character would have been giving less than 100%, or perhaps would have given up altogether. But what I saw Thursday night, March 2, was a group of young men still having fun, still trying to improve, and in their 20th game, giving 110% to break into the win column against a capable East Jordan team. I saw a group of young men playing with pride, holding their heads high, and representing their school and community most admirably. I’m proud of this 2016/17 team. Life lessons learned this challenging season will serve these Saints well as they go marching into the future.
