Joseph ‘Pete’ McCarthy

Joseph McCarthy Joseph McCarthy Joseph “Pete” Howard Mc- Carthy, 85, of Pickford, passed away Sunday, April 2, 2017, at Hearthside Assisted Living in Sault Ste. Marie.

He was born August 10, 1931, in Pickford. His mother gave him the nickname “Pete” as a child.

Mr. McCarthy served in the United States Army in Korea, from 1950 until 1952. He received many awards, including the Purple Heart with Cluster, Combat Medics Badge, Korean Service Medal with three Bronze Stars, Korean Presidential Unit Citation, and the United States Nations Service Medal.

He lived and worked in Detroit for many years. Mr. McCarthy worked at General Motors, and he retired from there in 1988, before moving to the Mount Morris area.

He is survived by a sister and her family, Gladys Carmean of St. Ignace; numerous nieces and nephews, great-nieces and greatnephews, and great-great-nieces and great-great-nephews.

In addition to his parents, Mr. McCarthy was preceded in death by three brothers, John McCarthy, Robert McCarthy, who died as an infant, and Ray McCarthy; five sisters and their spouses, Rita and William Graham, Frances and Maurice Donnely, Roberta and Bernard LaDuke, Irene and Bert Doepker, and Audrey and Alex Handziak; a niece, Rebecca Benzing; three nephews, Richard Mc- Carthy, William Carmean, and John LaDuke; two cousins, Sandra Doepker and Reverend David Doepker; a brother-in-law, Durwood Carmean, and a sister-inlaw, Verona McCarthy.

Services will be Friday, April 7, at 1 p.m. at Clark Bailey Newhouse Funeral Home in Sault Ste. Marie with Father Sebastian Kavumkal officiating. Visitation will be from 11 a.m. to time of the service.

Burial will be in Donaldson Holy Family Cemetery in Barbeau.
