The St. Ignace Saints wrestlers were honored at a season-end banquet Sunday, March 19. Senior Alysse Bentley was recognized with the Coach’s Award, and junior Logan DeKeyser was awarded Most Valuable Player; freshman Mason Matson received Most Improved Player, and sophomore Hunter Amacher’s effort and determination earned the “111%-er” award.

The team posted a 19-5 overall record this season while going undefeated, 9-0, in the Straits Area Conference to take home the conference and district championships. The team also made their way to the regional finals to finish the season as regional runners-up. Sophomore Greg Paquin took home the individual district championship in the 140-pound weight class and qualified for the individual regional finals along with wrestlers Alysse Bentley, Hunter Brown, Trevor Matson, Zach Bigger, Mason Matson, Logan DeKeyser, and Hunter Amacher.

Coach Rich Cullen said he is eager for next season with 11 returning lettermen. He encourages anyone with an interest in wrestling to get involved early.

“We’re actively seeking new team members for a state tournament run next season, but this summer we will be putting in major work,” he said.

He added that a summer workout plan and immediate practice opportunities would be made available to anyone with even the slightest curiosity about wrestling.

The coach praised the support of the families and community for the wrestling program. The banquet was held at Fred’s Pub in St. Ignace.
