Downtown Car Accident Claims Life of St. Ignace Resident

An early morning crash Wednesday, April 12, took the life of St. Ignace resident Jennifer Foster. The accident occurred just before 1 a.m., when police say her car veered off the road and crashed into a downtown building owned by the Driftwood Restaurant and Motel on the corner of North State and Reagon streets.

St. Ignace City Police Officer Ryan Edwards, the first responder on the scene, and a passerby administered cardiopulmonary resuscitation until emergency crews arrived. Mrs. Foster was taken to the hospital by ambulance, but was pronounced dead shortly after. The crash is still under investigation.

Ms. Foster was the only occupant of the car, and no one was injured in the building. The building houses a business office on the bottom floor and two Driftwood Motel vacation rentals on the top floor. There was no one in the office at the time, but there were guests in the rentals. The guests were unharmed, and because the concrete block wall of the building was broken through and heavily damaged, the guests were evacuated from the scene immediately after the crash.

The crash site has been temporarily repaired, but further repair to the building and any use of the upstairs floor awaits inspection of the building by insurance adjusters, according to owner Heidi Sposito. Full repair is expected to begin soon.

Ms. Foster, 40, is survived by her mother and stepfather, a brother, and two daughters. An obituary is published in this issue.
