Saints Girls Take First at St. Ignace Track Regional, Boys Place Second

(Photograph courtesy of Emily Fullerton) The Saints girls placed first, and the boys team second, when St. Ignace hosted the Upper Peninsula track and field regional 44 Friday, May 19. The girls finished with a team score of 64, followed by Munising with 50, Newberry 27, Rudyard 19, Gwinn 14, and Manistique 13. The boys scored 29, a distant second from Newberry, who won with a team score of 104. Rudyard was third, followed by Munising, Manistique, and Gwinn.


St. Ignace junior Linnie Gustafson won the high jump event during regional 44 held at Kiwanis Track Complex in St. Ignace Friday, May 19. Gustafson’s jump of 5’3” beat the former record of 5’2.5” that had stood since 1982 and was held by her coach, Trudy Olsen. Mrs. Olsen’s high jump record had been the longest standing record before Gustafson set the new mark. The two are pictured here on the track shortly following the regional meet. (Photograph by Emily Fullerton) Linnie Gustafson of the Saints won high jump, setting a new school record of 5’3”, breaking the record of 5’2.5” held by her coach Trudy Olsen, since 1982. Gustafson was also part of the first place 800-meter relay team. Emily Coveyou took first place in both the 200 and 400-meter dashes, and was a member of the Saints winning 1600-meter relay team. Libby Becker took first in the 800 meter run.

For the boys, Tucker Shepard placed second in both the 110 and 300 meter hurdles. Drew Marshall was second in discus, Joe Kelly second in shot put, and Mitchell Peterson second in pole vault.
