Janet Johnson

Janet Johnson Janet Johnson Janet Lorraine Johnson, 80, of Pickford, was the home economics teacher at Pickford High School for 25 years. Mrs. Johnson passed away Wednesday, May 24, 2017, at her home.

She was born November 5, 1936, to Harold and Olga (nee Heselschwerdt) Widmayer in Chelsea.

Mrs. Johnson grew up on a dairy farm in Chelsea. She was graduated from Chelsea High School.

She earned a bachelor’s degree in education at Michigan State University. After a year of teaching, she returned to Michigan State University to earn her master’s degree. After teaching one year in Crystal Falls, she and her husband, Richard “Dick” Johnson, moved to Pickford, where they both taught at Pickford High School until 1985. Mrs. Johnson mentored countless students. She also served as the advisor to an extremely active Chapter of the Future Homemakers of America. Throughout the years, her FHA students were leaders in chapter, region, and state offices, and then, in the communities in which they lived as adults.

She was active in the Pickford New Horizons Church of the Nazarene, where she taught Sunday school, served as church secretary and treasurer, and planned and prepared food for many church events.

Mrs. Johnson loved to read and travel, often camping with the Good Sam Club. She and her husband visited every Canadian province and also 48 of the 50 states in the United States, missing only North and South Carolina. They also traveled to Egypt, and did missionary work in the Bahamas. She enjoyed sewing and made many clothes and costumes for her grandchildren. Mrs. Johnson liked playing dominos, cribbage, golf, and taking evening strolls around town with her husband.

She is survived by a son and his family, Richard Jr. and Sandy Johnson of Saginaw; two daughters and their families, Kay and Jerry Stephens of Saginaw and Gloria Johnson and Robert Laverty of Cedarville; grandchildren, Daniel and Ruth Johnson, Diane and Pete Donofrio, Michele and Keith Hoolsema, Denise Kading, Marcy Johnson, David Johnson, and Betty Mayer; great-grandchildren, Elizabeth and Everett, Ashleigh and Chris, Danny, Brandon and Hope, MaKena, Carver, David and Kathy, Christopher, Gabriele, Peter, Rachele, Jessica, Ryan, Stephanie, Tim, Louie John, Brett, Keith, Katie and Danny, Shianne, Branden, and R.J., and 16 great-greatgrandchildren.

In addition to her parents, Mrs. Johnson was preceded in death by her husband, Richard; a daughter and son-in-law, Stephanie and Ernest Podoba, and two grandsons, Del Podoba and Jason Johnson.

Visitation will be Thursday, June 1, from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. at R. Galer Funeral Home in Pickford. Visitation will also be Friday, June 2, from 10 a.m. to 11 a.m. at New Horizons Church of the Nazarene in Pickford.

Services will be Friday, June 2, at 11 a.m. at the church.

Burial will be at Oaklawn Chapel Gardens in Bruce Township.
