No One Hurt as Pickup Trucks Collide on Mackinac Bridge

No one was hurt in a two-vehicle collision that closed the Mackinac Bridge for 2.5 hours early Sunday, June 4.

Two northbound pickup trucks collided as they approached the toll plaza on the causeway. The first vehicle, a pickup truck pulling a utility trailer loaded with farm materials, was struck from behind by another pickup at 12:21 a.m., causing the truck with trailer to jackknife and turn into the southbound lane, spilling the contents of the trailer. The vehicle that struck it veered into the northbound guardrail and caught fire.

The driver of the vehicle that struck the truck and trailer was given a ticket, said Mackinac County Undersheriff Ed Wilk.

There were only a few vehicles on the bridge at the time of the accident, said Bob Sweeney, Mackinac Bridge Authority secretary, and the bridge was reopened to traffic at 2:30 a.m.
