Brevort Midsummer Festival To Be June 18

Trinity Lutheran Church in Brevort will host the annual celebration of Swedish culture with the Midsummer Festival Sunday, June 18, at the church. Leaf tying for the pole starts at 2 p.m., followed by the pole raising and a potluck meal. All interested people may attend the free program and are asked to bring a dish to pass, as well as table service and lawn chairs.

The pole raising is based on an ethnic custom that originated in the Aland Islands, an island chain in the Baltic Sea that was once part of Sweden. Many of the Brevort area’s Swedish American families have ties to the region and continue to honor its traditions. In 2010, the community of Brevort received the Michigan Heritage Award, the state’s highest distinction given to communities that keep their folk traditions alive, in recognition of this event.
