Wyman Hired as Mackinaw City Village Manager

By Erich T. Doerr

Pat Wyman, who has served as the Mackinaw City village police chief and the interim village manager at various times, will now be the permanent village manager. Mr. Wyman told The St. Ignace News he hopes to continue in his new role until retirement, providing some stability for the village in its manager role after several years of frequent transitions in that position.

The village council promoted him to the post Thursday, June 15.

“This is a new challenge compared to the last two decades,” Mr. Wyman said. “I’m pretty excited about it.”

Mr. Wyman served as the interim village manager from October 2012 to May 2013 during a prior manager search between the departure of Don Beavers and the hiring of Adam Smith. He was appointed to again serve as the interim manager in April, when the village dismissed previous manager David White. Mr. Wyman said he is humbled by the council’s decision to move him into the role permanently and that he is happy to serve it and village citizens in this role.

He said he is fortunate to have held the manager position before, as this time around he knows what to expect in the role. During his prior tenure as the manager, he learned a lot that is helping him return to the post, including using the contacts he made earlier, knowing roles of the various commissions, and understanding how the agenda of the manager differs from that of the police department. His first few weeks on the job have included efforts to become acquainted with all of the projects Mr. White had started, while also organizing his office to fit his needs.

Mr. Wyman’s current goal as manager is to maintain the village projects that are already in development and work toward bringing them to a successful conclusion. In the future, he wants to promote Mackinaw City in an effort to improve the community and work to maintain its current services and expand them where possible. He said he wants to be a progressive leader.

As Mr. Wyman moves to the village manager office, he will begin to shed his duties at the Mackinaw City Police Department. A replacement is being sought there. Sergeant Todd Woods is serving as the interim chief right now. He was appointed when Mr. Wyman returned to the manager position.
