Duarte ‘Dewey’ Lopes


Duarte Lopes Duarte Lopes Duarte Alvaro “Dewey” Lopes, 77, of Cedarville, passed away Tuesday, June 13, 2017, in Sault Ste. Marie.

He was born June 3, 1940, to Luciano and Angelina Lopes in Shanghai, China.

Mr. Lopes grew up and lived in China until 1954, when he moved to San Francisco, California, with his father and sister. He became a legal citizen of the United States while in middle school. After he was graduated from high school, he went on to earn a bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering from Stanford University. He subsequently joined the United States Air Force, and later married his first wife, Wendy. He retired from the Air Force after 26 years of service, and he continued serving in the civil service and the public sector for several years before retirement.

In retirement, Mr. and Mrs. Lopes moved to Cedarville, where he continued his life of service as a member of the local Coast Guard Auxiliary. He served as assistant golf coach at Cedarville High School. Throughout his life, Mr. Lopes enjoyed the outdoors, sailing, skiing, tennis, golf, and hiking.

After his wife’s death, he met Virginia Dennis. They soon married and shared their mutual love of life and travel.

He is survived by his second wife, Virginia; a daughter, Tory; a son, D.J., and two grandchildren, Grayson and Emma.

In addition to his parents and his first wife, Mr. Lopes was preceded in death by his sister, Loretta.

A celebration of life open house is scheduled for the end of July in Cedarville.
