Emma Brown Emma Brown Emma L. Brown, 93, of St. Ignace passed away peacefully early Saturday morning, July 22, 2017, surrounded by a loving family. She was born February 26, 1924 in Norwich Township, Big Rapids to John and Rose (Fitzharris) Kailing. She attended Ursuline Academy near Detroit and finished her schooling in Big Rapids. Emma met her husband in Big Rapids where Mr. Brown was a student at Ferris State College. They married on June 28, 1948 in Big Rapids and the couple moved to St. Ignace in 1950 with two of their eight children. In 1968 they purchased Brown’s Grocery from Claude’s mother who had owned the small corner grocery store since 1954. The building was constructed in 1954 and was used as a fish market until 1955 when groceries were added. Brown’s grocery store closed June 1986.

She was very active at St. Ignatius Loyola Catholic Church, and Ste. Anne’s Altar Society, serving as secretary many years. She was also active in the Food Pantry when it was in the basement of the church, the early days before Hope Chest. Emma loved playing cards with her lady friends and family. She had 10 children. Her husband died in 1983. Emma was loved by all those who knew her and will be sorely missed.

She is survived by five boys and three girls; Kenneth and Barbara Brown, St. Ignace; John Brown, St. Ignace; Mike and Linda Brown, Lansing; Dennis and Cheryl Brown, St. Ignace; Richard and Denise Brown, Marquette; Patricia and Felix Ingram, Weidman; Janet Brown and Tom Eiseler, St. Ignace; Mary and Dick Huskey, St. Ignace; 22 grandchildren and 25 great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by two sons, Stephen at age two and Bernard at birth, and three grandsons, Josh, Louie and John Paul. Also her siblings, Carl, Joe, Eddie, Margaret, Rose, Mary, and Florence, and her husband.

Mass of Christian Burial will be Thursday, July 27, at 2 p.m. at St. Ignatius Loyola Catholic Church with Fr. Frank Ricca, Fr. Norbert Landreville, and Fr. Dan Depew officiating, assisted by Deacon Tom McClelland. Visitation will be from noon until service time at the church. Burial will be in St. Ignatius Cemetery beside her husband.

Dodson Funeral Home, St. Ignace assisted the family with arrangements. Pallbearers will be her 11 grandsons.
