Vern Romano

Vern Romano Vern Romano Vern Lewis Romano, 85, of Pickford, was a Korean War veteran who received a Bronze Star for his service. Mr. Romano loved working on the farm or in the woods cutting timber and skidding logs with his horses. For many years, he and his team of Belgians went to pulling contests, where he took pride in his horses and met many lifelong friends.p Mr. Romano assed away Friday, July 14, 2017, at Ball Hospice House in Sault Ste. Marie.

He was born August 13, 1931, to Philip and Rose (nee Amarose) Romano, Sr.

Mr. Romano grew up in Sault Ste. Marie. He was drafted into the Korean War and after returning from the service, he worked for Frank Huyck Trucking and also in the woods for DeTour Box Company. He later was employed at Michigan Limestone Operations in Cedarville, from which he retired.

He attended Pickford Presbyterian Church.

Mr. Romano liked to hunt, read westerns, do jigsaw puzzles, and attend local athletic events.

He is survived by his great friends, Cal and Roberta Hall and their family, Bob and Julie Hall, Randy and Claudia (nee Bury) Hall, Mark and Joyce Smith, Callie, Olivia, and Connor Smith; two sisters and their families,

Viola Merritt of Six Lakes and Shirley and Ed Patrick of Dafter; a sister-in-law and her family, Delores Romano of Sault Ste. Marie, and many nieces and nephews.

In addition to his parents, Mr. Romano was preceded in death by a brother, Philip Romano; a sister, Sr. Lucy Romano (IBVM), and a brother-in-law, Gene Merritt.

A private gathering will be held at a later date.

Interment will be at Italian Cemetery in Hessel.

R. Galer Funeral Home in Pickford assisted the family with arrangements.
