Mackinac Island

By Margaret Doud

Sunday, July 23, was a terrible day with brisk southeast winds, heavy rain, and thunder. All the sailors’ wives were arriving on Mackinac and the strong wind made for a fast Bell’s Beer Bayview Mackinac Race. The first yacht to finish was Il Mostro, at about 11:30 a.m., and Wizard came in second. Even in the terrible weather, it was a remarkable sight to see the boats sailing so fast over the finish line. Later in the day, it started to clear and Monday, July 24, and Tuesday, July 25, was absolutely beautiful. The scene from Fort Mackinac looking down on the harbor, with the cruise ship Pearl Mist and all the sailboats tied up, was an awesome sight. On Tuesday, all the sailors and their wives enjoyed the Bell’s Beer Bayview Mackinac Race party in the Borough Lot. Music, good food, and a great time ended the race for 2017.

Dwight LaPine’s and Jeff Shaffer’s garden on French Lane is just beautiful and folks stop all the time to enjoy all the flowers in bloom. The white hydrangeas on French Lane and all over town are as big as basketballs. The Mackinac hollyhocks are in full bloom and the flowers around the Veterans Memorial in the City Park are very attractive. It’s a great time of the year on Mackinac Island.

People walk down the boardwalk at night to watch the sunset. They stand in amazement as colors of orange, yellow, and red dance off the Straits of Mackinac and slowly descend behind the Mackinac Bridge. It truly is an awesome sight.
