The training vessel, State of Michigan, from the Great Lakes Maritime Academy in Traverse City, was docked in the harbor for a few days recently. The flowers all over Mackinac are just beautiful, especially in front of the Lenox and Metivier Inn. Hollyhocks, daisies, and sunflowers are just a few of the many flowers on the Island. August is a great time to visit.

We extend deepest sympathy to the family of William “Bill” Allen, 94, who passed away Monday, August 7, at the Hiland Hospice House in Petoskey. Bill served in the United States Air Force during World War II and the Korean conflict. He was a decorated veteran. He and his wife, Jean, spent many happy summers on Mackinac Island and spent winters in Sarasota, Florida. Services were held Tuesday, August 15, at 11 a.m. at Little Stone Church on Mackinac Island with the Reverend Dan Hans officiating. May he rest in peace. An obituary appears in this issue of The St. Ignace News.

Sunday, August 6, Michael and Melissa Straus invited friends and neighbors to help them celebrate the 100th anniversary of their home, “Rockwood,” in Hubbard’s Annex. It was a wonderful celebration on an absolutely beautiful afternoon. Everyone enjoyed touring the home with unique features, which was built by Patrick Doud in 1917.

Family and friends gathered in Mackinaw City Sunday, July 30, to celebrate Captain Paul Allers’ 80th birthday. It was a great celebration with lots of stories and great memories. Island friends wish Captain Paul many more happy years.

We send special greetings to Wally Peck, who worked for many years on Mackinac and most recently at the Chippewa Hotel. Wally, who lives in Manistique, received a kidney transplant this spring. He would love to hear from his many friends on Mackinac. His address is Harborview Towers, Manistique, MI 49854.

Larry and Donna Jones of Lansing were on Mackinac Island recently.

They visited their daughter and son-in-law, Erica and Bill Chambers, and their family, who were also there visiting Bill’s father, James Chambers.

Brother Jim Boynton, Father John Essel, and Leanne Brodeur, along with several Island workers from Mexico, recently traveled to Tahquamenon Falls. Everyone had a wonderful time.
