Ruth Tuohy Becomes Centenarian

Ruth (nee Wixson) Tuohy celebrated her 100th birthday Wednesday, August 2, with family and friends in Shelby Township. Mrs. Tuohy was born in St. Ignace in 1917 to George and Belle Wixson. Mr. Wixson was a longtime barber in St. Ignace. Mrs. Wixson was married to Bill Benson August 29, 1936, and they were married until his death February 25, 1975. She was then married to Gerald Tuohy from 1977 until his death in 1986. Mrs. Tuohy now spends her winters in Venice, Florida, and her summers in Shelby Township. She is a fourth-generation descendent of Amable and Marie Goudreau, who settled in St. Ignace in the 1840s. Mrs. Wixson celebrated her birthday with her children, Bill Wixson and Patricia Wellington, and friends and family, including Al and Carol Colegrove of St. Ignace. Mrs. Colegrove and Anne Freel, also of St. Ignace, are both nieces of Mrs. Tuohy. (Photograph courtesy of Al Colegrove)
