This invitation to Michigan commissioners came directly from the White House and was arranged by the Trump Administration to introduce federal department officials to local political leaders.

“Our desire is to provide frontdoor access to the federal government for state, county, and tribal issues” said Special Assistant to the President William Kirkland.

The program included a presentation by Grand Rapids native, Secretary of Education Betsy DeVoss. She discussed the changes she is implementing in her department.

“The engagement of Michigan commissioners in this event is highly encouraging,” said Stephan Currie, executive director of Michigan Association of Counties. “There is nothing more valuable in the development of strong public policy than to have local elected officials discussing their most important issues with federal leaders.”

“We have now had face-to-face discussions with leaders from 14 major federal agencies and have direct contact information,” Mrs. Patrick said. “In the future, when we have questions, we’ll get answers.”
