Mary ‘Miz’ Salter

Mary Salter Mary Salter Mary “Miz” Salter, 85, of Gould City, passed away Saturday, August 12, 2017, at her home in Newton Township.

She was born November 29, 1931, in Ferry, during the Great Depression. She grew up in Rexton, where she attended school. She later was enrolled in Catholic school in St. Ignace, and she was graduated from high school in Manistique.

She married Jack Salter August 18, 1951, in Engadine. They made their home in Gould City, where they reared three children.

Mrs. Salter worked as a waitress, telephone operator, and bartender before landing a job as a postal clerk in Gould City. She retired as postmaster in Gould City, which was a very proud moment for her family.

Along with balancing work and motherhood, she was involved in the local community and the lives of her children. She attended sporting events, sat on the school board, held local dances, served as a Girl Scout leader, helped to organize the Gould City bingo games (she absolutely loved bingo), and attended Catholic church with her children. In her younger years, Mrs. Salter sang in the choir, rode a motorcycle, played guitar, and performed in local plays at the hall in Gould City. She loved people and truly enjoyed making items for others. She embroidered and crocheted many gifts, along with making baby afghans and sweater sets for family and local residents. She enjoyed drawing, painting, cooking, and visiting, and she had a true talent for baking and decorating cakes.

She kept busy and was always happy when friends came to visit. Mrs. Salter loved to travel, but she rarely ventured far from home unless it involved her children and grandchildren. She was a doting grandmother to her many grandchildren, along with being a favorite aunt to numerous nieces and nephews. She also had many godchildren.

She is survived by three children and their families, Gary and Dee of St. Ignace, Jackie and Al of Curtis, and Dennis of Gould City, and many grandchildren. She is also survived by a brother, Wilbur “Pudd” Goudreau of Houston, Texas, and a sister-in-law, Marge McCullough of Mt. Pleasant.

Mrs. Salter was preceded in death by her husband, Jack, who died October 23, 2015.

Mass of Christian Burial will be Saturday, August 19, at 11 a.m. at St. Timothy’s Catholic Church in Curtis with Father Timothy Hruska and Father Phillip Witkowski officiating. Visitation will be from 10 a.m. to time of the service at the church.

Burial will follow immediately after the service in Newton Township Cemetery. A luncheon will follow at the Newton Township Hall in Gould City.

Messier-Broullire Funeral Home in Manistique is assisting the family with arrangements.
