Larry Kyle

Larry Kyle Larry Kyle Larry Roger Kyle, 76, of Pickford, passed away Monday, August 21, 2017, at Ball Hospice House in Sault Ste. Marie, surrounded by his family.

He was born May 8, 1941, to Leonard and Rachel (nee Newman) Kyle in South Webster, Ohio.

Mr. Kyle grew up in Chillicothe, Ohio. He was graduated from Chillicothe High School. He attended The School of Drafting in Cincinnati, Ohio, before joining the United States Air Force, where he served for nine years. While in the Air Force, he was stationed at Kincheloe Air Force Base, where he met Carolyn Reamer. They were married October 26, 1963, at the Pickford Methodist Church. He left the Air Force in 1967, and he and his wife returned to Pickford.

He began working for the Chippewa County Sheriff’s Department in 1973 as a sheriff’s deputy. During this time, he spent another 11 years in the United States Army National Guard. He and his wife reared their three children in Pickford. In 1998, after 25 years of service, Mr. Kyle retired from the Chippewa County Sheriff’s Department.

During his years in Pickford, he served on the Pickford Public Schools Board of Education, and was the high school track coach for five years. He was instrumental in forming the American Legion Post 323 and served as the first commander. He was a volunteer for the Pickford Fire Department. He was especially proud of two Life Saving Awards. While serving with the Chippewa County Sheriff’s Department, Mr. Kyle saved the life of a 14- year-old girl, and from the National Guard for guiding a group of youngsters to safety from a tornado that flattened the trees around them.

He was a member of the AMVETS Post 79. He was also a member of Pickford New Horizons Church of the Nazarene.

Mr. Kyle was a gun enthusiast and he liked antique cars. He and his wife enjoyed traveling and spending winters in Florida, Arizona, and Gulf Shores. His favorite pastime was spending time with his grandchildren and great-grandson. Last week he took his great-grandson on a final scooter ride.

He is survived by his wife of 54 years, Carolyn; his mother-in-law, Esther Waybrant; two daughters and their families, Kelly and Mark Terwilliger of Alabama and Kristine and Kevin Hill of Cedarville; a daughterin law, Bobbie Kyle of Sault Ste. Marie; seven grandchildren, Megan and Wesley Blackwood, Matthew Hill, Kylie Hill, Adam Terwilliger, Luke Terwilliger, Alex Rairigh, and Dannielle Price, and one greatgrandson, Parker Blackwood. He is also survived by a sister and her family, Patsy and Paul Baker of North Carolina; a brother-in-law and his family, Alan and Cathy Reamer of Pickford, and a sister-in-law, Marjorie Reamer (whom he called Maggie, his personal nurse) of Pickford.

In addition to his parents, Mr. Kyle was preceded in death by a son, Steven LeRoy Kyle, who died March 13, 2016; a sister, Lois Kyle; a brother, Gary Kyle, and a brotherin law, Steven Reamer.

Services will be held Sunday, August 27, at 3 p.m. at R. Galer Funeral Home in Pickford with Reverend Craig Weihman officiating. Visitation will be from 1 p.m. to time of the service.

Burial will be at a later date in Cottle Cemetery in Pickford Township.
