Free Wednesday Event Will Share School Supplies, Food

Project Backpack will take place Wednesday, August 30, from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Little Bear East Arena in St. Ignace. Backpacks and school supplies such as pencils, pens, glue, scissors, and paper will be given to every student who needs them from preschool to high school. Students will also get supplies including toothpaste and toothbrush, deodorant, and laundry detergent.

A Feeding America food truck will be on hand, as well. The general public will be asked to fill out a simple form, but there are no income restrictions on receiving food.

Project Backpack is sponsored by the Mackinac County Child Protection Roundtable. It is open to the community and there are no restrictions on receiving school supplies, according to Denise Kingsbury, Roundtable coordinator. “There are no financial questions,” she said.

Project Connect with have more than 20 various organizations set up with booths and information at the event, including the Department of Health and Human Services, (DHHS), Early On, Head Start, and organizations that help people pay utility bills.

Ms. Kingsbury said the event gets a lot of community help. Several local businesses send volunteers to help.

Ronda Engle of the Roundtable said high school students earning hours for youth community service will also be on hand to help that day.
