There is a tinge of fall in the air, but the days remain sunny and very pleasant. The flowers at the entrance to the post office and in front of the police station are just beautiful. It has been a great year for flowers on Mackinac Island. The big cruise ships Pearl Mist and the Grande Mariner visited the Island recently. It’s nice to see these ships in the harbor.

We extend deepest sympathy to the family of Richard “Dick” Alexander of Mackinaw City, who passed away Friday, August 25, at University of Michigan Hospitals in Ann Arbor. Dick and his late father, Tom, worked for many years on Mackinac as electricians at Grand Hotel, Windermere Hotel, and many other businesses. He had many friends on Mackinac. May he rest in peace. An obituary was published in the August 31 issue of The St. Ignace News.

Sunday, August 27, the Woodfill Center at Grand Hotel had a large crowd, especially our friends from St. Ignace, for the Mackinac Island Medical Center Auction. Everyone enjoyed good food, spirited bidding, and lots of laughs. We appreciate the Musser family and Grand Hotel, auctioneer David Levy, Bob Tagatz, who served as master of ceremonies, Vic Callewaert, the great ticket salesman, and to everyone who donated, attended, or worked. This is a wonderful event that supports the Mackinac Island Medical Center.

It was entitled “September on the Island,” with a great colored picture of the Windermere Hotel looking down Main Street. The advertisement was encouraging people to call and book rooms on Mackinac Island for the fall season.
