Pickford Volleyball Squad Plays Three in Two Days

By John Raffel

Pickford’s volleyball team is off to a 0-3 start. The Panthers have lost to Engadine, Rudyard, and St. Ignace. The losses to Rudyard and Engadine were in the conference.

“We have a very young team, and have four sophomores, all of which are seeing substantial playing time,” Pickford Coach Barbra Storey said.

Senior middle hitter Taylor Opolka has been a spark for Pickford.

“She is a key player offensively, and is strong defensively as well,” Coach Storey said. “Tori Thurmes, a junior setter, is a good all-around player who can adjust to play any position asked of her. Obviously, she is a team leader, being a setter, running the offense, very strong defensively, and has an excellent jump serve.”

Pickford has played its three matches in two days, Wednesday, September 6, and Thursday, September 7.

“In one day, we have made some great improvements,” Coach Storey said. “We have some young players who are getting used to a new level of play and a faster game. In addition, the group as a whole is learning to play together and learning to read each other. A key is knowing your hitters and where to place the sets, getting used to playing next to different players on defensive and blocking, etc.

“This is a fun team to work with, they all get along well, have great attitudes, and all work very hard.”
