Claris Snyder


Claris Snyder Claris Snyder Claris Ruth Snyder of St. Ignace passed away Saturday, September 23, 2017, at Mackinac Straits Health System in St. Ignace, surrounded by her family. She was 95.

She was born August 17, 1922, to Harry and Louise (nee Miner) Kalbfleisch in St. Ignace.

Mrs. Snyder grew up in St. Ignace. She was graduated from LaSalle High School in 1940. After high school, she married Warren Snyder December 27, 1940, and they started their family in St. Ignace. Mr. Snyder worked for several years on the State Ferry boats, and then he and his wife bought and operated Warren’s The People’s Store. They operated the store until Mr. Snyder’s health failed in the 1970s. After her husband died in 1978, Mrs. Snyder continued to work for several other retail stores in St. Ignace, until she retired in the early 2000s.

She was a member of the St. Ignace United Methodist Church, where she served as organist for more than 35 years. She also played at all of the local churches for weddings, funerals, and special events.

Mrs. Snyder was an avid golfer and bowler. She liked to grow plants in her home, especially poinsettias.

In her retirement years, she enjoyed spending time with her family at the cottage on Brevort Lake, and she played weekly card games with her lady friends. She also volunteered wherever she was needed.

She is survived by two daughters and their families, Sharron and Larry Lasley and Faye Belonga, both of St. Ignace; two sons and their families, Brian and Sandy Snyder of St. Ignace and Brent and Wendy Snyder of Moran, and 10 grandchildren, Dan Lasley, Donna and Willie LaLonde, Lara and Mike Gustafson, Lynn and Marty Baughman, Jim and Pam Belonga, Corrie Lowetz, Sherri and Scott Grenke, Lauren and Casey Morningstar, Landon and Ashley Snyder, and Tyler Snyder. She is also survived by 24 great-grandchildren; six great-great-grandchildren, and many nieces and nephews.

In addition to her parents and her husband, Mrs. Snyder was preceded in death by a son-in-law, James Belonga; two grandsons, John Paul Brown and Mitchell Snyder; her twin brother, Clair Kalbfleisch; two other brothers, Selden Kalbfleisch and Floyd Kalbfleisch, and two sisters, Verna Miles and Zona Pierson.

Services will be held Thursday, September 28, at 1 p.m. at the St. Ignace United Methodist Church with Pastor Susie Hierholzer officiating. Visitation will be from 11 a.m. to time of the service at the church.

Mrs. Snyder’s grandchildren will serve as pallbearers.

Burial will be in Gros Cap Cemetery in St. Ignace.

R. Galer Funeral Home in Pickford is assisting the family with arrangements.
