Poor Planning Leaves Potential Bridge Walkers Behind

LETTER TO THE EDITOR

To the Editor:

I traveled from Indiana with my three teenagers to create a memory of walking The Mighty Mac on its 60th Anniversary. I stayed up-to-date on information via Michigan Bridge Authority website, kept updated on traffic via the Michigan State Police Web site, even connected with the hotel and spoke to locals on what to expect.

We were in line by 7:30 a.m. for shuttle tickets until 10 a.m., when State Police traveled down the street on the megaphone with news, “If you’re in line here, you won’t be walking the bridge this year.”

News reports indicated 25,000 people walked the bridge this year. Let me share, you had another good 10,000+ more waiting in line for shuttle tickets in the Lower Peninsula.

Waiting 2½ hours in line, I didn’t see one port-a-john, I didn’t see one sign of wait times for shuttle tickets, actually no information at all was shared until the disappointing news from the police megaphone.
