Lois Stein

Lois Stein, until recently of Hessel, passed away Saturday, September 30, 2017, at Mother Teresa House in Lansing. A two-time cancer survivor, she was 80 years old.

She was born June 18, 1937, to Glen and Bessie Hackett in Hudson, where she grew up and was graduated from high school. The youngest of 14 children, she was particularly close to her four sisters, all of whom preceded her in death.

She married Jerry Stein June 3, 1961, at Sacred Heart Church in Hudson. Together they reared four children in the Traverse City area. She worked as an office manager for State Farm Insurance in Traverse City for many years before retiring and moving to Hessel in 1999.

Mrs. Stein possessed a boundless generosity of spirit, a beautiful smile, and an infectious laugh. She was a member of Our Lady of the Snows Church in Hessel, helping with funeral luncheons and other parish activities. She volunteered regularly at Cedar Cove Assisted Living in Cedarville.

She was an avid golfer and reader. She enjoyed walks with her dog, Snickers. She loved sailing, and was first mate on the family sailboats, traveling on most of the Great Lakes. She loved the water, including swimming with her grandchildren. She always put her family first, and her grandchildren were among her greatest joys. Mrs. Stein loved basketball, and she was an enthusiastic fan of the Michigan State University Spartans women’s basketball team.

She is survived by her husband of 56 years, Jerry Stein; four children and their families, Doris Pomeroy of Davison, Mark and Donna Stein of Fort Wayne, Indiana, Susan Stein-Roggenbuck and Frank Roggenbuck of Lansing, and Cheryl Crowley of Boyne City, and four grandchildren, Jacob Roggenbuck, Kyle Pomeroy, Melanie Pomoroy, and Katerina Crowley.

She was preceded in death by her parents and all of her siblings.

A funeral mass will be celebrated Friday, October 6, at 11 a.m. at Our Lady of the Snows Church in Hessel with Father Peter Fosu officiating. Visitation will be from 10 a.m. to time of the service at the church.

Her ashes will be interred at St. Ignatius Loyola Cemetery in St. Ignace at a later date.

Memorial contributions may be directed to the family, a portion of which will go to Mother Teresa House in Lansing, with contributions sent in care of Gorsline Runciman Funeral Homes, 900 East Michigan Avenue, Lansing, MI 48912, who is assisting the family with arrangements.
