Roy Smith


Roy Smith Roy Smith Roy Jefferson Smith, 94, of Kincheloe, formerly of Cedarville, passed away Sunday, October 15, 2017, in Sault Ste. Marie.

He was born November 9, 1922, to Edwin and Florence (nee Griffin) Smith in Cedarville.

Mr. Smith grew up in Cedarville, where he was graduated in 1942. He served his country in the United States Navy during World War II.

He married Dolores Trombley November 13, 1948, in Royal Oak. They honeymooned in the Upper Peninsula for the start of deer season November 15. They made their home in Detroit, where Mr. Smith first worked at the Chrysler factory. He then started working for carpet cleaners, which led him to carpet installation. In 1966 the family moved back to Cedarville, and then to Kincheloe in 1981. For 45 years, he was self-employed selling floor covering. He retired in 1996.

He was a member of Law-White VFW Post 7958 in Hessel.

Mr. Smith enjoyed watching his grandchildren play sports. He loved to play golf, and he played every chance he had from 1936 through 2011. He was very good at it, and he passed his golf cart and clubs on to his grandson, Taylor, when Taylor was finally able to beat his grandfather, family members said.

He is survived by his wife of 68 years, Dolores of Kincheloe; a daughter and her family, Marie and Jay Peaks of North Carolina; three sons and their families, Gerald and Rita Smith of Kincheloe, Robert and Cynthia Smith of Cedarville, and Roy E. and P.J. Smith, also of Cedarville; eight grandchildren, and 10 great-grandchildren. He is also survived by a sister, Fern Berlin, and two brothers, Russell Smith and Donald Smith.

In addition to his parents, Mr. Smith was preceded in death by a granddaughter, Selma Smith; three sisters, Dorothy McKerchie, Bessie Couture, and Viola Carr, and two brothers, Fred Smith and Raymond Smith.

No public services are planned.

R. Galer Funeral Home in Pickford assisted the family with arrangements.
