Area Veterans Day Services Announced

Veterans Day, Saturday, November 11, is an observance to honor veterans of all wars. It marks the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month in 1918, when World War I ended. The following services are planned to observe Veterans Day in local communities. All veterans and the public are invited to attend the observances.

St. Ignace

There will be a Veterans Day assembly Friday, November 10, at 10 a.m. in the LaSalle High School gymnasium to recognize local veterans. The high school concert band will perform. A reception will follow.

Following the program at the school, there will be an observance with the American Legion Friday at approximately 12:45 p.m. in the dining room of Evergreen Living Center at Mackinac Straits Health System. Light refreshments will be served.

The Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW) Post 5114 will offer a Veterans Day all-you-can-eat whitefish dinner (includes full salad and dessert bar) Saturday, November 11, from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. Cost is $11 per person. The public is welcome.

Engadine

Engadine Consolidated Schools students will host a Veterans Day program Friday, November 10, at 1 p.m. in the gymnasium.

Kinross

The 14th annual Honoring Our Anishinaabe Veterans Powwow will be held Saturday, November 11. Grand entry is at 1 p.m., with a feast at 5 p.m., at the Kinross Recreation Center at 43 Wood Lake Road in Kinross. Those attending should bring a dish to pass.

Les Cheneaux

Cedarville High School will host a Veterans Day program Friday, November 10, at 10 a.m. in the John Duncan Gymnasium. The high school band will perform. A reception will follow.

The Les Cheneaux Community Library in Cedarville will host a Veterans Day open house Friday, November 10, from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Refreshments will be served.

Mackinaw City

American Legion Post 159 of Mackinaw City will host a potluck dinner Saturday, November 11, at 5 p.m. at the American Legion Post at 106 South Huron Street. Members and guests are asked to bring a dish to pass.

Pickford

A Veterans Day program will be Monday, November 13, at 10:15 a.m. in the Pickford High School gymnasium.

The Pickford Area Historical Society will host an open house at the Pickford Area Historical Museum Friday, November 10, from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. There will be entertainment and door prizes. Refreshments will be served.

Rudyard

The Rudyard High School student council and Warmth for Warriors, a Rudyard nonprofit organization, will present a special program honoring local veterans on Veterans Day Friday, November 10, at 1 p.m. in the gymnasium at Rudyard High School. A reception for veterans and their families will follow the program.

Wequayoc Cemetery

A removal of flags ceremony and celebration will be held Saturday, November 11, at Wequayoc Cemetery at 2354 East M-134 in Hessel. Removal of flowers will be at 11 a.m., with removal of flags and ceremony at 1 p.m. A potluck lunch will follow. Those attending should bring a dish to pass. The program is free and open to the community. All veterans are welcome.
