Merle Summerland

Merle Summerland Merle Summerland Merle R. Summerland, 84, of Gould City, passed away Monday morning, October 30, 2017, at his home.

He was born March 26, 1933, to William and Sena (nee Vanden Bosch) Summerland in Johannesburg.

He grew up on the family farm, the youngest of five children. The farm was a Grade A dairy with the old water cooler that held 10-gallon milk cans, family members recalled, which later was switched from stanchions to a modern parlor system with pipeline that eliminated the old milk buckets.

Mr. Summerland enlisted in the United States Navy September 10, 1952, where he served until his honorable discharge October 20, 1952, attaining the rank of seaman recruit.

He married Shirley Ann Renodin December 19, 1953, and they continued to run the family farm until he built sawmills and equipment, which they owned and operated until his retirement in 1996.

Mr. Summerland loved to build things by hand out of wood or metal. He was a master craftsman and he built his own home in 1975. He also enjoyed building furniture using intricate work with scroll saws. He also loved to hunt and fish, providing food at the family table. When his grandchildren and great-grandchildren arrived, his love and pride could be seen in his eyes every time he was with them or when someone talked about them.

He is survived by his wife of 64 years, Shirley Ann; four children and their families, Sean Black of Johannesburg, Mary and Bill Lane, also of Johannesburg, Elaine and Richie Webber of Lewiston, and Merle Summerland of Culpepper, Virginia; grandchildren, Christopher and Patty King of Beaverton, Ashley Black of Gaylord, Lisa and Kenny Tabaka, also of Gaylord, Amanda Lane of West Branch, Harley Lane of Johannesburg, Heather and Blake Haulsey of Nashville, Tennessee, and Trevor Switalski of Lewiston, and great-grandchildren, Corbin, Courtney, Carly, Danika, and Lucas.

In addition to his parents, Mr. Summerland was preceded in death by his siblings, Louise Cooley, Melvin Summerland, William Larrabee, and Florence Orcutt.

A celebration of life service was held Monday, November 6, at 11 a.m. at LifeChurch of Gaylord with Pastor Steve Scheer officiating.

Memorial contributions may be directed to LifeChurch of Gaylord.

Beaulieu Funeral Home in Newberry assisted the family with arrangements.
