Walter Kopinski

Walter Kopinski Walter Kopinski Walter Martin Kopinski of Hessel passed away Sunday, November 5, 2017, in Petoskey. He was 100.

He was born September 9, 1917, to Albert and Sophia (nee Polka) Kopinski in Carlisle, West Virginia.

Mr. Kopinski’s family moved to the Detroit area when he was about five years old. He was graduated from high school in Detroit. He attended the Henry Ford Trade School to learn the tool and die trade.

He married Nellie Veronica Burkacki October 5, 1940, in Detroit.

Mr. Kopinski served in the United States Army during World War II. He was stationed in the Aleutian Islands in Alaska, prepared to invade Japan, when the war ended and he returned home. He and his wife made their home in St. Clair Shores, and he worked for Ford Motor Company for 44 years. They retired to Hessel in 1976 to live on the vacation property he purchased in 1968.

He was a member of Our Lady of the Snows Catholic Church in Hessel and American Legion Post 62 in St. Ignace.

Mr. Kopinski loved working with wood and he made many pieces of furniture and grandfather clocks. He also enjoyed archery, and he was an avid Detroit Red Wings fan.

He is survived by a daughter and her family, Judith and Joseph Parisi of Gladwin and Port St. Lucie, Florida; a son and his family, Martin and Carol Kopinski of Hessel and Hernando, Florida; grandchildren, Deborah and Andrew Ives, Marianne and Jim Vinette, Matthew and Kristie Kopinski, Katherine and Johnny Poston, Michael and Katie Kopinski, Karin and Bobby Gilbert, and Mark Kopinski, and great-grandchildren, Jase, Nash, Tristan, and Logan Kopinski, Ethan, Kaitlyn, and Emma Kay Gilbert, Taylor Joseph “Kasi” Ives, and Maddie Peach Poston.

Mr. Kopinski was preceded in death by his wife of 74 years, Nellie Kopinski; a grandson, Charles J. Parisi; four sisters, Helen Pulanecki, Nellie Cody, Mary Juk, and Wanda Frayer, and four brothers, Joseph, Frank, Louie, and Rudolph Kopinski.

Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated Friday, November 10, at 10 a.m. at Our Lady of the Snows Catholic Church in Hessel with Father Peter Fosu officiating.

Visitation was Thursday, November 9, from 4 p.m. to 5:30 p.m. at R. Galer Funeral Home in Pickford, followed by a prayer service at 5:30 p.m.

Burial was in Oaklawn Chapel Gardens in Bruce Township.
