Rudyard Volleyball Team Takes Home Regional Title

By John Raffel

The Rudyard Bulldogs volleyball team went 2-0 at Brimley to celebrate a Class D regional title, and defeated Pellston in the regional finals Thursday, November 9, 3-1.

But Rudyard lost the first game with Pellston 25-19.

“We struggled with serving and running our offense and played way too timidly,” Rudyard Coach Ellen Perry said. “Set two was better, although the Hornets kept it close for most of the game, but we won 25-18. Set three, we started to look like ourselves. We ran out to a 19-3 lead behind Lane Clegg serving eight straight with four aces. We sealed that victory at 25- 12. We fell behind in set four for a bit, 9-13, but we were able to tie the score at 16.

“Sierra Dugan came alive from the attack line with four kills, combined with Bailey VanSloten’s four service points and the matchending block kill by Sydnie Zeeryp.”

Also for Rudyard, Jordan Spring on serve reception and defense had 17 digs, Zeeryp had seven block kills in total and six kills, Autumn Lemmerman had 15 serves, Cierra Molina with 33 assists and five tip kills, Lane Clegg added five kills and 13 digs, and Dugan totaled a career-high 20 kills, seven digs, and one amazing save.

“Team serving evened out at 95 percent at the end of the match,” Coach Perry said.

Rudyard is to face Munising Tuesday, November 14, in Manistique in its first-ever quarterfinal appearance.

In the district regionals Tuesday, November 7, Rudyard beat Wolverine 25-5, 25-8, and 25-11.

“Jordan Spring started us off with 15 straight serves, five of them being aces, to give us a 16-0 lead in set 1,” Perry said. “For the night, she served 24-of-25 with eight aces and was defensive leader with 11 digs. Zeeryp was kill leader with eight and she added two blocks and seven digs.”

Also for Rudyard, Clegg hit seven kills, five aces, and six digs. Dugan had five kills, Lauren Royer had two kills, Hannah Beelen and Emilee Curtis each added one. Molina dished out 25 assists.
