Cheboygan Man Crosses 1st

Mike McFadden of Cheboygan was the first successful hunter to cross the Mackinac Bridge at about 4 p.m. on opening day of rifle deer season Wednesday, November 15. Mr. McFadden spent the rainy day hunting by himself at a camp in Fibre in Chippewa County. He bagged this eight-point buck, which he estimates to be 3.5 years old, on a 100-yard shot at about 10:20 a.m. Wednesday. The buck weighed 172 pounds dressed out. Mr. McFadden has hunted for more than 50 years and spends time “bouncing around” to different hunting camps. He was looking forward to continue hunting on the following weekend when his daughter, Molly, would join him at camp from her home near Frankenmuth. Mr. McFadden is a board member of the Mackinac Chapter of the Quality Deer Management Association. As of Friday, November 17, the deer count at the bridge was up 58%: 2,012 this year compared to 1,276 in 2016.
