Labor Day Bridge Walk Meeting Planned for Feb. 16

The Mackinac Bridge Authority (MBA) will hold a meeting at 9 a.m. Friday, February 16, at Little Bear East Arena in St. Ignace to discuss the 2018 Labor Day Bridge Walk.

November 20, the MBA decided to keep the annual walk on Labor Day, but asked local tourism bureaus, chambers of commerce, and businesses to fund and organize the event.

Costs to hold the event increased significantly this year since the bridge was closed to all traffic for the first time, due to increased busing and security costs. MBA board member Kirk Steudle estimates it cost about $400,000 for this year’s turnout of 25,000 walkers, and costs would increase with more participants.

The MBA unanimously agreed to ask local businesses, chambers of commerce, and tourism groups to develop a plan for how to run the Labor Day Bridge Walk in time for the February meeting.
