Comet Girls Start Conference Season With Victory

By Erich T. Doerr

The Mackinaw City varsity girls basketball team started its Northern Lakes Conference season Friday, December 1, with a 38-28 victory at home against Alanson. The Comets (2-0, 1-0) led 22-7 at halftime and 28-12 after the third quarter.

“It was a little sloppy out there, but both teams played extremely tough and it was just a night where baskets were hard to come by,” Mackinaw City Coach Adam Stefanski said. “I am proud of the way our team reacted to [Alanson’s] run late in the game with one of our own. We did a nice job of controlling the game from start to finish, so this is a great starting point for us in league play.”

Alanson player Brooke Nguyen kept the Vikings in the game during the fourth quarter as she drained a trio of consecutive three-point baskets. Adding a fourth three-pointer later in the final quarter, she would go on to score a game-high 16 points.

Mackinaw City also won in junior varsity action, besting Alanson 53-6. Three Comets players scored in double figures. Gabi Bell led the way as she scored 14 points. Madison Smith added 11 points, while Marlie Postula tallied 10 points.

Comets Varsity Statistics: Haley Jones, 13 points; Samantha Somers, eight points; Kameryn Hartman, seven points; Sarah Morse, seven points.

Vikings Varsity Statistics: Brooke Nguyen, 16 points.
