Arlis Fountain


Arlis Fountain Arlis Fountain Arlis Amelia Fountain, 89, of Pickford, passed away Wednesday, December 6, 2017, at Ball Hospice House in Sault Ste. Marie.

She was born December 17, 1927, to Andrew and Sarah (nee Steel) Cowell in Pickford.

Mrs. Fountain grew up in Pickford. She was graduated from Pickford Schools. She attended Michigan State University and Lake Superior State University.

She met Oren Roy Fountain before he joined the United States Marine Corps. Upon his return, they were married June 28, 1947, in Pickford, where they lived and reared their three sons.

She was employed as a cook for the Pickford Schools lunch program for more than 20 years, before she retired to enjoy her hobbies.

She was an original member of the Pickford Historical Museum, and for one year she was also the belle of the community days parade for the Pickford Seniors group. She was a member of the Pickford Presbyterian Church and its women’s association. She served as an elder of the church starting in 1964.

Mrs. Fountain kept busy. She quilted, sewed, cooked, knitted, and gardened. She especially loved to teach her grandchildren. She was an avid reader and liked Amish stories. She loved her flowers and had a special disdain for the deer that were always trying to eat them. She always watched Wheel of Fortune and Jeopardy. She was a fan of the Detroit Red Wings, Detroit Tigers, and Detroit Lions.

She is survived by her sons and their families, Vern and Juanita Fountain Sr. of Hanover and Andrew Fountain of Wisconsin; grandchildren, Tammy, Cindy Lou, Andrina, Emilianna, Mary, Kelsee, Zeb, Trina, John, Richard, Vern, Jr., Rachel, Ben, and Wayne; 27 great-grandchildren, and one great-great-granddaughter. She is also survived by a brother-inlaw and his family, Edwin and Betty Fountain of Fennville.

In addition to her parents, Mrs. Fountain was preceded in death by her husband, Oren; a son, Dale Oren Fountain; a grandson, Andrew Fountain, Jr., and his mother, Tonya Czechan; another grandson, Austin Fountain; a granddaughter, Sarah Garcia; a daughter-in-law, Beverly Fountain, and three sisters-in-law and their families, Shirley and Albert Potter, Laurel and Al Erickson, and Ann and Keates Rasmussen.

Services were held Saturday, December 9, at 2 p.m. at Pickford Presbyterian Church in Pickford with Reverend Jessica Paulsen officiating. Visitation was from noon to time of the service at the church.

Burial will be in Cottle Cemetery in the spring.
