‘Snowmobile the Mighty Mac’

Event Grows From 39 Registered Sleds to 104 in Its Second Year

More than 90 snowmobiles crossed the Mackinac Bridge Saturday, December 16, of 104 that were registered. Bob Winkler and his wife, Elaine Koch of West Salem, Ohio, took part in the Top of the Lake Antique and Vintage Snowmobile Show and Ride in Naubinway earlier this year and returned to the Straits area Saturday to be part of the Snowmobile the Mighty Mac parade. The couple’s two snowmobiles made it to the Upper Peninsula all right, only for the engine on Mrs. Koch’s Evinrude to quit just before the two passed the Mackinac Bridge toll plaza, when they were caught in a brief backup in the procession. Mr. Winkler hopped off his Gilson snowmobile and the pair worked to restart the Evinrude, but try as they might, it just would not refire, so he used his snowmobile and a towrope to pull her sled behind him to the finish line. See story on the snowmobile crossing, page 10.
