Saints Girls Pick Up First Win of Season; Garen Bowls 214

The St. Ignace Saints bowling team was in action Saturday, December 16, at Dondee Lanes in Sault Ste. Marie. The girls lost to Sault Ste. Marie 21-9 in their first match, and defeated Boyne City 28- 2 in their second match.

Against Sault Ste. Marie, the Saints scored six points in the baker matches, winning game one 119-97, and the two-game total, 218-211. The team lost game two 114-99. St. Ignace was outscored 17-3 in the individual matches, but fewer than 10 pins decided several head-to-head matches. Junior Morgan Thomas was the team’s high bowler with games of 155 and 146. Senior Alicia Garen bowled games of 131 and 154. Junior Andrea Kinjorski had games of 111 and 78, and freshman Skylar Dumas bowled games of 97 and 96. Senior Karlie St. Andrew bowled a 120, and sophomore Brianna McLennan bowled a 95.

The girls bounced back in the afternoon match to defeat Boyne City 28-2. The Saints won both baker matches, 126-89 and 140-97, earning 10 points, and eight of the ten head-to-head matches, earning 18 out of 20 points. Garen led all scorers with a 214 game, and a two game series of 354. Thomas had games of 132 and 124. McLennan bowled games of 125 and 115, and St. Andrew had games of 87 and 73. Dumas bowled one game of 116, and Kinjorski bowled an 88. The Saints girls improve their record to 1-2.

The Saints boys were much improved from week one, but lost both matches to Sault Ste. Marie and Boyne City. Against Sault Ste. Marie, the Saints won both baker matches, 145-124 and 135-101, earning 10 points. The Blue Devils, however, were able to win each individual match, earning them a 20- 10 victory. Sophomore Casey Brake was the team’s high bowler with games of 156 and 118 for a 274 series. Senior Ned McLennan had games of 111 and 137, senior Joel Dodds bowled games of 102 and 137, and senior Luke Valletta had games of 119 and 91. Senior Rob Matelski bowled one game of 63, and junior Shyanne Bird bowled a game of 114.

In its second match, the Saints lost to Boyne City 26-4. St. Ignace lost both baker matches by scores of 106-142 and 116-197. Bird won both of her individual matches with games of 138 and 148. Valletta picked up a point by winning one of two games with scores of 145 and 88. Dodds was the team’s high individual bowler, bowling games of 169 and 145. Matelski had games of 120 and 86. Brake bowled one game of 146, and McLennan bowled one game of 138. The Saints boys team is now 0-3.

After the holiday break, the Saints will travel to Petoskey, Saturday, January 6, for their next meet.
