After November 1, 1957, Michigan State Ferries steamboats were tied up at Dock 2 in St. Ignace, awaiting buyers. At first, former crewmembers were kept on the payroll as watchmen aboard each ship, but after more than a year with no ferries being sold, the Michigan Highway Department decided to economize, and eliminated their positions.
