While the new Mackinac Bridge dominated the regional skyline, the funnels of the laid-up Vacationland, stored in her old slip, could be seen above Mackinaw City from the newly created bridge approach road. Curious tourists could drive right out onto the State Dock to inspect the exterior of the ship for the next two years. Her interior was only used once in that time, when the Michigan State Police quartered a detachment aboard for traffic control and security during the official Bridge Grand Opening ceremonies in June 1958.
