Project Manager Luke Gerhart (from left) and Superintendent Mike Grittenden of DeVere Construction Company of Alpena stand on the edge of pond four at the St. Ignace wastewater treatment facility Wednesday, November 12, as crew members work below, contouring the bottom of the pond. The approximately six-foot-deep pond holds 750,000 gallons of wastewater and is getting a new liner. Also, a manhole is being added that will serve as a drain and aid in future cleaning. The work, which is wrapping up for the season as winter weather approaches, is part of the city's $3.8 million sewer improvement project. Kamphuis Pipeline Company of Grand Rapids also is finishing work on the North State Street lift station. Overseeing the entire project is the engineering firm Wilcox Professional Services of Escanaba. Work is expected to resume in April 2009, depending on the weather.
