Former St. Ignace resident, Gerald “Gerry” W. Bell, suffered a serious head injury near his Florida home and subsequently passed away at Holmes Regional Medical Center on December 18, 2023.

Gerry was born on May 20, 1937, to Roy and Bernice (Vallier) Bell. He graduated from LaSalle High School in 1956 and shortly thereafter joined the Navy. He served at various duty stations in the United States, Europe, and South Pacific until he retired as a Master Chief Petty Officer (MCPO) in 1988.

After retirement he made his home in Florida where he was an active parishioner at Our Lady of Grace Catholic Church in Melbourne. Gerry enjoyed photography, dancing, and dining with his friend, Erma, at Dustin’s Bar-B-Que where they were considered family.

He is preceded in death by his parents, brothers John Benson Bell of Boston and John Stauffer of St. Ignace, as well as his aunt Joan Vallier of St. Ignace. Gerry was married three times, and sadly, lost each wife to health issues.

Gerry is survived by his two sisters, Roberta (Bell) Paquin and Joyce Halitsky, both of St. Ignace and his dear Florida friend, Erma Christman. He is also survived by several nieces and nephews.

A funeral service will be announced later this Spring with burial to follow at Gros Cap Cemetery .—
