Pickford School Millage Passes

By Lucas Day

Results are in for the Mackinac County primary election, held Tuesday, August 4.

In the only contested County Commissioner race, Nora Massey beat Tom Fitzpatrick in a Democratic primary runoff by winning nearly two-thirds of votes. Ms. Massey will face Republican Craig Lehrke in the November 3 election to decide who will oversee the county’s 2nd District, which includes part of or all of Garfield, Hendricks, Moran, Brevort, and Hudson townships.

The winner of Ms. Massey versus Mr. Lehrke will join Republicans Jim Hill, Paul Krause, Mike J. Patrick, and Calvin McPhee as county commissioners. The other four will be running unopposed come November.

Voters renewed the millage funding Pickford schools, 408 to 174. Pickford Public Schools will keep the funding that gives the district around $652,600 yearly, or about 15% of the budget. The funding comes from non-homestead properties like vacation homes, rental properties, vacant land, commercial properties, and industrial properties. The renewal is for 18 mills.

In a Moran Township ballot question, renewal of funding for recreation in the township passed, 180 – 101 votes.

There were also some township races in Mackinac County.

In Garfield Township, Paula Fillman won the Republican nomination for clerk with about 57% of the vote and will not have a Democratic challenger in the election.

In Marquette Township, Julia Kronemeyer won the Republican nomination for supervisor over George Huff with about 62% of the vote and does not have a Democratic challenger in the primary race.

In Portage Township, Donald Reed won the Republican nomination for supervisor with about 68% of the vote and will not be opposed in the general election.

In a congressional race to see who faces off against Jack Bergman in the November 3 primary election, Dana Ferguson won Mackinac County with about 63% of the vote. This election is voted on by much of the upper Lower Peninsula and the entire Upper Peninsula, so Mackinac County is only part of the electorate, but Ferguson was the overall choice as well.

In a crowded field of Republicans looking to take over for Lee Chatfield as the state representative for Michigan’s 107th District, which covers Emmet, Mackinac, and Chippewa counties, John Damoose was the preferred choice of Mackinac County voters, obtaining over half the vote in the field of seven candidates. Mr. Damoose also won the district-wide race.

In the Democratic race to face Mr. Damoose in the November election, Jim Page won Mackinac County and the district-wide election, obtaining over 67% of the vote in Mackinac County.

Both Chippewa and Mackinac County clerk offices said that absentee ballot voting was up significantly this year to years past.

Just over a third of eligible Mackinac County voters cast a ballot.
